Day 1 – 27 February 2026 Opening Day of the Festival The first day begins with prayers and ceremonial blessings from monks of the Central Monastic Body. Featured Sacred Dances Dance of the Black Hats (Shana) One of the most important dances of the festival. The dancers represent tantric masters who subdued negative forces and transformed them into protectors of Buddhism. Interesting Fact: The Black Hat Dance is believed to purify the festival grounds before other sacred performances begin. Dance of the Lords of the Cremation Grounds (Durdag) Dancers wearing elaborate skull masks symbolize the impermanence of life and the cycle of death and rebirth. Dance of the Stags and Hounds A colorful performance depicting the victory of compassion over ignorance. Visitor Experience The first day is generally less crowded, making it ideal for photography and close observation of the dancers.

A Celebration of Guru Rinpoche The second day focuses on the life and teachings of Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche). The dance portrays the eight forms in which Guru Rinpoche appeared to spread Buddhism throughout the Himalayas. Each manifestation symbolizes: Wisdom Compassion Courage Spiritual transformation Ging and Tsholing Dance This dramatic performance features dancers carrying drums and ritual instruments. According to tradition, they clear negative energies and prepare the spiritual space for blessings.
